February 23, (THEWILL) – The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has reiterated its commitment to enforcing all rules and regulations as the second round of fixtures kicks off this weekend. COO Davidson Owumi held a meeting with department heads on Thursday, where he stressed the importance of increased vigilance.
Owumi explained extra scrutiny was needed to protect the integrity of the league as teams grow more desperate in the closing stages of the season. He warned of attempts to compromise officials or gain unfair advantages in the pursuit of prizes like the title or continental qualification places. With over 20 years of experience in football administration, Owumi knows the pressure clubs face at this point.
Stakeholders across the league were urged to support the NPFL in maintaining standards. Referees, clubs, players and fans all have a role to play. Judicial bodies must also process cases efficiently and effectively. Owumi pledged the NPFL would enforce rules as comprehensively as possible.
The NPFL received praise for the NFF, who generally support disciplinary decisions instead of bending to covert partisan pressure. Most matches are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, except Rivers United versus Remo Stars. That fixture was postponed due to Rivers United’s CAF Confederation Cup commitments.
As the 2024 season heads towards its conclusion, the NPFL hopes these final rounds can build on successes from the previous campaign to deliver another credible and compelling competition.
