November 16, (THEWILL) – Following a left knee injury sustained during training, Christopher Nkunku has been forced to leave France’s World Cup squad.
The RB Leipzig player, who has been linked to a January transfer to Chelsea, had already begun training with Didier Deschamps’ team before the competition.
He fared worse in a collision with Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga at Les Blues’ Clairefontaine training facility. He was reportedly hoping the injury was not serious at first, but additional scans revealed otherwise, and he will now miss France’s World Cup defence.
The French FA released a statement that read: “Injured in training, Christopher Nkunku must give up participating in the World Cup. The whole group shares Christopher’s sadness and wishes him a speedy recovery.”
Chelsea will be anxiously awaiting any information regarding the severity of the injury as he is the man they had chosen to give their faltering attack some vitality in January.
