September 24, (THEWILL) – Chelsea eased into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a comfortable 5-0 victory over League Two side Barrow at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday. The star of the show was summer signing Christopher Nkunku, who scored a brilliant hat-trick to help his team progress.
Nkunku opened the scoring in just the 9th minute, before doubling Chelsea’s lead six minutes later. An own-goal by Barrow’s Paul Farman and a tap-in by Pedro Neto put the match beyond doubt before the break. Nkunku then rounded off the scoring in the 75th minute to complete his treble and seal a comprehensive win for the home side.
Chelsea Manager, Enzo Maresca, made 11 changes to the team that started the 3-0 win at West Ham on Saturday, but the new-look lineup had little trouble dispatching their lower-league opponents. The last 32 of the Carabao Cup is being played over two midweek rounds to accommodate the expanded Champions League and Europa League schedules.
Other English Premier League clubs such as Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have already booked their place in the next round, while Liverpool and Arsenal will be looking to join them when they play their matches on Wednesday. Chelsea’s comfortable victory means they can now turn their attention to their upcoming league fixtures as they aim to climb the table.
