Nine-Man Cape Verde Bow Out Of AFCON After 2-0 Loss To Senegal

January 25, (THEWILL) – Senegal advanced to the TotalEnergies 2021 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals with Sadio Mane scoring a stunning goal against Cape Verde.

Unfortunately for the Cape Verdeans, they finished the game with nine after having had two players sent off in the 2-0 defeat to the Senegalese.

The first meeting between both sides in the continental competition on Tuesday at Kouekong Stadium, tilted in Senegal’s favour when Patrick Andrade was sent off in the 21st minute after a VAR check on a foul on Pape Gueye.

Cape Verde, who qualified for the knockout phase as one of the top third-placed teams in their groups, went on to control Aliou Cisse’s side effectively and kept alive their hopes of reaching the final eight for the first time since 2013.

However, just before the hour mark, another VAR intervention left them with a difficult task, with goalkeeper Vozinha receiving a red card – while being treated on the sidelines – following a violent clash of heads with Mane while the Liverpool forward was pursuing a bouncing ball at the edge of the box.

Mane’s brilliance ultimately broke the deadlock when he looped a finish off the crossbar from 18 yards out following a corner, albeit the goal was only upheld after another VAR review of a probable foul in the build-up.

Mane was replaced seven minutes later, evidently still feeling the effects of his collision with Vozinha, and could now be a worry for Sunday’s last-eight match against Mali or Equatorial Guinea.

Senegal, who have yet to surrender a goal at the 2022 finals, ensured their place in the next round with Bamba Dieng’s calm finish as they counter-attacked in injury time.
