August 30 (THEWILL) – Team Nigeria put in an impressive performance at the recent World Para Powerlifting Championships held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), winning a total of seven medals across multiple weight classes.

The haul included two gold medals, two silver medals and three bronze medals for the Nigerian para powerlifters. The championships served as a crucial opportunity for the Nigerian team to qualify for the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.

Mark Onyinyechi and Kafilat Almaruf won gold medals in the 61kg and 73kg categories, whilst Esther Nworgu and Bose Omolayo claimed silver in the 41kg and 79kg classes. Bronze medals went to Oluwafemiayo Folashade (86kg), Ezuruike Roland (54kg) and Thomas Kure (65kg).

Charles Ezenwanne, President of the Nigerian Para Powerlifting Federation, praised the athletes for their dominance at the event. He emphasised that the team must keep improving and developing new techniques and strategies to maintain Nigeria’s status as a para powerlifting powerhouse. He noted that preparations for the 2024 Games will begin immediately. “We must not take things for granted or rest on our oars because other countries are beginning to focus more on this sport to knock us off our stride,” he added.

With strong performances across weight categories, Team Nigeria underlined their winning culture and competitive spirit. Whilst celebrating their success in Dubai, the team will now set their sights on more medal success at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris.
