December 14, (THEWILL) – Nigerian filmmaker, Imoh Umoren, has reacted to plans by the National Film and Video Censors Board to enforce a law banning smoking in movies.

NFVCB’s Executive director, Adebayo Thomas, while presenting a communique at the end of an entertainment industry stakeholders’ roundtable had earlier said that the board and the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture were worried about the growing evidence linking the entertainment industry with the increasing tobacco use and its impact on public health.

Imoh Umoren, accused the NFVCB of trying to regulate an industry which was started and sustained without help from the government.

The filmmaker who reacted to this news via his Twitter account, wrote; “These are some of the reasons I no longer license my films here. This pseudo-soviet union won’t be dictating how my characters should be portrayed.”

In another tweet he wrote; “Instead of creating enabling environment and tax incentives to Nollywood, you want to find all sorts of ways to frustrate filmmakers because nothing pisses oppression more than seeing their victims thriving despite them.”
