December 30, (THEWILL) – The Super Eagles will play a warm-up match against Coton Sport of Cameroon in preparation for the TotalEnergies 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to hold between January 9 and February 6, next year.

Coton Sport’s Director of Communications Salisu Amadu disclosed that the club has received a proposal for this warm-up tie from the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF.

The 15-time Cameroon Premiere Division champions are based in Garoua, which is the same location of the camp where the Super Eagles will play their AFCON Group D matches.

On January 11, Nigeria’s continental campaign will commence with a fixture against Egypt, seven-time AFCON winners.

On the 15th, the Super Eagles face Sudan, the 1970 AFCON champions, before concluding their group stage campaign with a match against Guinea-Bissau four days later. All three matches will take place at Garoua’s Stade Omnisport Roumdé Adjia.

The friendly match between the Super Eagles and the Cottoners has yet to be scheduled for now but will have to be fixed some days before the opening tie against Egypt to allow for fitness and rest.

In the meantime, the Nigerian national team camp for the 2021 Afcon kicked off on December 29 in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. The first invited player to arrive at the camp is Orlando Pirates defender Olisa Ndah.

Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi and Enyimba goalkeeper John Noble have subsequently joined the 23-year-old former Akwa United player in Abuja.

The last time the Super Eagles won the AFCON was in 2013, when a team led by the late footballer and coach Stephen Keshi defeated Burkina Faso in the final.
