December 21, (THEWILL) – Selected teams from Ghana and Nigeria will face off in the second African Basketball Festival at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Friday, reigniting the long-standing sporting rivalry between both West African nations.
The festival, run by RITE Sports under the direction of the Beyond the Return Committee, aims to connect Africans living abroad through sports, music, and fashion.
Following a two-year hiatus brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the event returns this year with musical performances, a fashion display, and another match between teams representing France and the United States of America (USA).
Ivy Prosper, the Beyond the Return Committee’s social media manager, stated that her organisation was intrigued by the chance for networking and teamwork that basketball offered.
Meanwhile, Socrates Safo, the Beyond the Return community liaison officer, issued a warning to event planners not to advertise their activities under the “Beyond the Return” banner without the Committee’s consent. Before events could earn the seal of approval, he said several standards had to be met, including assuring patron safety and security.
“Beyond the Return” is a follow-up to the popular “Year Of Return” – #YearOfReturn, Ghana 2019 campaign that marked the 400th Anniversary of the arrival of the first documented African slaves in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619.
