January 25, (THEWILL) – Niger secured a spot in the quarter-final of the 2022 TotalEnergies African Nations championship (CHAN) with a shocking 1-0 victory over Cameroon on Tuesday.
The decisive match, held at the Miloud Hadefi Stadium in Oran, Algeria, was the final match of Group E.
Midfielder Soumaila Badamassi was the hero for Niger, coming off the bench to score a stunning free-kick that deflected off the wall and left Cameroon’s goalkeeper, Marcelin Mbahbi, beaten, sparking wild celebration among the Nigerien team.
The win secured the top spot in Group E for Niger and advanced them to their second ever quarter-final in the tournament, which is exclusively for home-based players. The Menas, in their fourth CHAN tournament appearance, reached the quarter-final for the first time in 2018.
They will now face the Black Galaxies of Ghana in the quarter-final on Saturday at the Miloud Hadefi stadium in Oran. This is a huge achievement for the Nigerien team and they will be looking to continue their winning streak against Ghana.
