August 28, (THEWILL) — The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc has launched NIBSS Digest, a quarterly digital journal designed to deepen industry conversations around the future of payments and financial services in Nigeria, Africa and beyond.
The maiden edition, themed “Redefining the Future of Payments”, examines the technologies, policies and innovations reshaping digital payments and the wider financial services ecosystem.
NIBSS said the publication would provide a platform for regulators, financial institutions, fintech companies and other stakeholders to share insights on developments affecting the payments industry. The journal is available free of charge through the NIBSS website.
Moving Beyond Moving Money

Head of Corporate Communications at NIBSS, Adewunmi Oshilaja, said the publication was created to broaden discussions about the role payment systems play in economic development.
“NIBSS Digest was conceived to broaden the conversation around payments, shifting the focus from simply moving money to actively moving economies”, Oshilaja said.
He said the rapid evolution of payment ecosystems had made it necessary to create a common platform where regulators, financial institutions and technology innovators could exchange practical insights.
“As payment ecosystems rapidly evolve, establishing a unified platform where regulators, financial institutions, and tech innovators can share actionable insights is vital”, he added.
The maiden edition focuses on how payment infrastructure can become more interoperable, intelligent and inclusive while supporting sustainable economic growth.
The publication features contributions from regulators, commercial banking executives, fintech founders and global payment advocates.
What The First Edition Covers

Key issues explored in the inaugural edition include financial inclusion, operational resilience, customer experience, artificial intelligence, digital identity, payment infrastructure and cross-border integration.
It also examines emerging initiatives such as Open Banking, application programming interfaces, sovereign payment rails and the National Payment Stack.
The focus comes as Nigeria’s payments industry moves beyond simply increasing the volume and speed of electronic transactions towards building infrastructure that can support a broader digital economy.
NIBSS has described its National Payment Stack as next-generation digital infrastructure connecting banks, fintechs, government and citizens through a secure and interoperable platform. The platform has processed 26.55 million transactions worth ₦1.4 trillion across 48 participating institutions as of August 2026.
This development places greater importance on issues such as security, interoperability, fraud prevention and the ability of payment infrastructure to support businesses and consumers at scale.

Oshilaja said the maiden edition reflected the direction of the financial services industry and was intended to provide a forward-looking perspective on its development.
“This maiden edition captures the ambition of our industry at a defining moment, providing a forward-looking roadmap for a more inclusive, secure, and interconnected financial future”, he said.
NIBSS said the Digest would be published quarterly, with each edition focusing on a core theme and critical developments within the payments ecosystem.
The organisation has also opened submissions for its second edition, inviting regulators, financial institutions, fintech companies, academics, development partners and technology leaders to contribute.
The journal is therefore positioned as more than a corporate publication. It provides a platform for different parts of the financial ecosystem to examine the policies, infrastructure and technologies that will influence the next phase of Nigeria’s digital payments economy.
