October 28, (THEWILL) – Newcastle have confirmed that midfielder, Sandro Tonali, has been handed a 10-month worldwide football ban for betting on matches and indicated when he is expected back.
The 23-year-old was found guilty of placing wagers while playing for AC Milan in Italy. Tonali’s agent acknowledged the player has a gambling addiction.
The scandal has shaken Italian football, with Juventus’ Nicolo Fagioli also suspended for 7 months. Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo is under investigation as well.
On Friday, it was revealed Tonali would face a global ban. A recent Newcastle statement verified the punishment and outlined steps to help him overcome his addiction.
“Tonali has been prohibited from competitive football for 10 months, effective 27 October 2023, following illegal betting charges by the Italian FA,” the club said. “He will be eligible to return on 27 August 2024 after completing a therapeutic and educational program.”
