September 27, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United pulled off a shock 1-0 victory over English Premier League champions Manchester City to advance to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. Swedish striker, Alexander Isak, netted the winner in the 53rd minute at St James’ Park.
It was a heroic performance from the Magpies, who made 10 changes from the side that thrashed Sheffield United 8-0 last weekend. Pep Guardiola also shuffled his pack, but City dominated the first half, with Newcastle keeper, Nick Pope, making several fine saves.
The introduction of Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon at halftime changed the game, and Newcastle were quickly on the front foot. Eight minutes into the second period, Jacob Murphy set up Isak to slot home from close range.
Shellshocked City struggled to respond as Newcastle resolutely defended their lead. Despite bringing on Phil Foden late on, the visitors rarely threatened and their frustrations boiled over, with manager Guardiola booked for touchline dissent.
It was Newcastle’s first victory over City in 11 attempts and a memorable night for the Toon Army. They march on in the cup while the holders bow out after a lacklustre display.
