Newcastle Keep European Hopes Alive With Win At Forest

February 10, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United gave their hopes of European qualification a major boost with an entertaining 3-2 victory away at Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, who had not scored since September, netted twice to lead the Magpies to an important three points.

The hosts twice equalised through Manchester United loanee Anthony Elanga and January signing Callum Hudson-Odoi. However, goals from Guimaraes and Fabian Schar ensured Newcastle left with maximum points to move up to 7th in the English Premier League table.

Forest remain dangerously close to the drop zone in 16th, now winless in the league in 2024. The home side will feel aggrieved to have not been awarded a penalty for an alleged foul by Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka.

Nonetheless, Newcastle capitalised on their good fortune to regain the advantage minutes later through Guimaraes’ second of the night. The victory leaves the Magpies just two points off Manchester United in the standings.

With European football secured last season, Eddie Howe’s men appear determined to achieve back-to-back continental campaigns. However, inconsistency has hindered their efforts so far. This hard-fought win could provide the catalyst for a strong run-in.
