The NCC said all device models intended for importation, assembly, distribution or sale must obtain the required type approval. Suppliers must also submit the International Mobile Equipment Identity information of individual devices through the approved compliance process for verification before sale and distribution.

The NCC said it had engaged manufacturers, importers and industry associations on the compliance process, urging businesses that remained uncertain about the requirements to seek guidance through its approved support channels.

The automated system will support collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service to reconcile import records, improve compliance with applicable duties and promote fair competition among businesses meeting their regulatory obligations.

The commission warned that devices failing to meet the requirements could be restricted from accessing Nigerian mobile telecommunications networks when the enforcement framework is fully implemented.
