NBA Elects Former Kano Attorney General As New President

BEVERLY HILLS, AUGUST 01 , (THEWILL) – The Nigerian Bar Association has elected Mahmoud Abubakar, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Kano State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, as its President to succeed Augustine Alegeh (SAN), whose two-year tenure ends this month.

Mahmoud polled 3055 votes, out of available 5,439 votes, to defeat Joe-Kyari Gadzama who polled 2,384 votes in the election conducted through electronic voting between Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31, 2016.

Dajan Gal emerged as the first Vice President with 4057 votes while Monday Ubani was elected second Vice President with 4375 votes, however, both the first and second Vice Presidents emerged unopposed.

However, Olagunju Isiaka polled 2721 votes to emerge General Secretary as against Yama Desmond who secured 2,510 votes as announced by the Chairman of the NBA Electoral Committee, Ken Mozia (SAN).

Ohagba Loe polled 2,402 votes to emerge first Assistant Secretary, while Balogun Oyeyemi emerged Legal Adviser with 3068 votes as against Onwuzuike Christopher who polled 2,043 votes.

The election was also monitored by the Deputy Director, Legal unit, of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mariam Musa.

It was the first time that the association would be conducting its election through electronic voting which was open to all lawyers in the country.

Mahmoud is expected to be sworn in this month as the 28th President of the NBA.
