April 10, (THEWILL) – The NBA has reason to celebrate after announcing on Monday, that it had set a new record for total attendance this season.
From the previous season, the league’s fans showed up in droves, eager to return to arenas after the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. With over 22 million attendees, this marks the second time in history that the NBA has surpassed this attendance figure, and it is a testament to the enduring popularity of the sport.
While much of the attention in the sports world is focused on media rights and TV deals, the NBA’s success in terms of attendance and in-arena gate cannot be overlooked. The league shattered its previous sellout records, notching up 791 sellouts, and also achieved an all-time high arena capacity of 97 percent.
The 2018/2019 sellout record of 760 was easily surpassed this year, showcasing the NBA’s enduring appeal to fans. In addition to total attendance, the NBA also set records for average game attendance, number of sellouts, and overall percentage of capacity. Teams averaged more than 18,000 fans per game, marking the first time this figure has been achieved.
All in all, this has been a standout year for the NBA, and its fans can look forward to even more exciting seasons ahead.
