December 20, (THEWILL) – After a last-minute equaliser was ruled out for offside, Eljif Elmas’ early goal was enough to give Napoli victory at AC Milan. In the fifth minute, the Macedonian international snuck in at the near post to head home Piotr Zielinski’s corner for the only goal of the game.
Milan seldom seemed like getting anything out of the fixture until the final minute, when a long ball was pushed towards Olivier Giroud and eventually dropped to Franck Kessie’s feet, who hammered the ball home.
However, Giroud was offside in the lead up to the goal, although in a prone position, and the goal was stuck out, allowing Luciano Spalletti’s men earn a crucial victory at the grounds of one of the season’s impressive sides.
With the win, Napoli draws equal with Milan but four points behind League leaders Inter.
Milan has only won one of their last 14 league games against Napoli, whose spirited display in Sunday night’s victory helped them halt a bad run of form themselves, after an impressive unblemished start to life in the current campaign.
Pioli’s team lacked a cutting edge once again, and they were not saved by late Ibrahimovic heroics, leaving them in third position and just two points clear of fourth-placed Atalanta as the Rossoneri’s three-game unbeaten league run came to a tame end.
Up next for Milan is a trip to Empoli on Wednesday, on the same day that Napoli hosts Spezia, in Serie A’s final matchday of 2021.
