August 30, (THEWILL) – Napoli have signed Manchester United midfielder, Scott McTominay, for €30m. The transfer was completed just before the Friday deadline, ending McTominay’s 22-year association with United.
The 27-year-old came through United’s youth system and made 255 appearances for the first team, scoring 29 goals. In his final season, he netted 10 times, finishing as the club’s third-highest scorer behind Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund.
Despite his important role under manager Erik ten Hag last season, United could not guarantee McTominay regular playing time going forward. The club is aiming to move away from the open style of play that characterised their 2023/2024 campaign.
For Napoli, McTominay represents a major signing in a prolonged summer transfer window. The Italian club endured a disappointing 2023/2024 season, finishing tenth in Serie A after winning the title the previous year.
New Napoli Head Coach, Antonio Conte, has publicly criticised the club’s standards and hopes McTominay will help improve their on-field performance. The Scottish international joins a team looking to bounce back from a poor title defence.
