BEVERLY HILLS, December 15, (THEWILL) – Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal is certain to compete at the Australian Open to kick- off the 2021 tennis season, according to his manager Benito Perez-Barbadillo.
Stringent COVID-19 quarantine rules and travel restrictions put in place by Australian authorities has left the participation of many of the world’s best players in doubt.
Swiss maestro Roger Federer is still working on fitness and is unsure whether he will travel Down Under for the new season’s first Grand Slam due to injury.
Therefore, Nadal’s confirmation comes as a massive boost to the organisers of the Open.
“Rafa is confirmed he is travelling to Melbourne and playing in the Australian Open,” Perez-Barbadillo clarified.
The Australian Open, which was previously scheduled to take place between Monday, January 18 and Sunday, January 31 is now most likely to start in February to allow players fully quarantine before beginning their preparations for the tournament.
