Murray Bows Out Of Miami Open In Vintage Fashion

March 25, (THEWILL)- Putting up a defiant last stand, Andy Murray treated fans to one final vintage performance in his farewell appearance at the Miami Open, on Sunday. Though the 36-year-old British star ultimately fell 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 to Czech opponent Tomas Machac in the third round, he exhibited the never-say-die spirit that made him a legend and earned him an army of devoted supporters.

Murray’s heart and determination, qualities that powered him to three Grand Slam titles, were on full display in his Miami swan song. The packed crowd at the Butch Bucholz court roared their approval as the 36-year-old produced a vintage performance befitting of his status as a tennis legend.

The scoreline did not tell the full story of Murray’s battling display. Tied at one set apiece and 5-5 in the third, the Brit appeared finished when he rolled his ankle and hit the court in agony. However, after receiving treatment, a defiant Murray re-strapped his ankle and returned to the fray, eventually forcing a third-set tiebreak before succumbing to Machac.

As he has done countless times, Murray soaked up the adulation from the Miami crowd one last time, applauding the fans who have cheered him on throughout his storied career. “I love it here,” an emotional Murray said. “I’ve spent so much of my tennis career here and I would have liked it to have gone on a little bit longer.”

Departing Miami with confidence-boosting wins over Matteo Berrettini and Tomas Martin Etcheverry, Murray insisted the “pretty positive” week proved he can still compete at the highest level. “To still be able to compete with these guys is a credit to myself and the work I have done,” said the two-time Miami champion. “I am proud of myself.”
