SAN FRANCISCO, January 12, (THEWILL) – A Nigerian Army Court-martial sitting in Maiduguri, Borno State capital has sentenced Trooper Azunna Maduabuchi to death for killing his superior, Lieutenant Babakaka Shehu Ngorgi on July 29, 2020.
Maduabuchi was on Tuesday sentenced to death by firing squad after he was found guilty at the court session held at the Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri. This is in accordance with Section 106 of the Armed Forces Act.
The Court-martial also sentenced four other soldiers to prison for manslaughter.
Maduabuchi is of the Nigerian army’s 202 battalion in Bama, Borno state. He was accused of murder after he killed lieutenant Ngorgi who denied him a pass to visit his family.
The soldier had requested a pass to visit his family over an urgent matter and when he was turned down, he fired shots at the lieutenant who is the battalion’s adjutant responsible for administrative matters.
A pass is a written permission to be away from one’s military unit for a limited period of time, and with the army’s Operation Lafiya Dole, it could be for seven, 10 or 14 days.
