September 03, (THEWILL) – David Moyes blasted as “scandalous” a VAR decision that saw West Ham Maxwel Cornet’s late goal that could have been a thrilling equaliser overturned in a 2-1 loss to Chelsea.
Michail Antonio had given the Hammers the lead at Stamford Bridge in the second half and Chelsea was on the verge of suffering a second straight loss before goals from substitutes Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz turned the game around.
However, the drama did not end there as Hammers own substitute Cornet had a beautiful right-footed effort disallowed after Jarrod Bowen was seen to have fouled Eduoard Mendy in stoppage time.
The incident left the West Ham manager incensed and he claimed that Mendy had faked an injury, which VAR bought. He said: “You have seen it, it is a scandalous decision. It’s absolutely rotten from one of the supposedly elite referees – it doesn’t say much about whoever sent him over from VAR as well – it is an unbelievable decision against us.
“We feel we got back to 2-2 and it [the loss] was not down to anything we have done. I support a lot of the VAR stuff. I actually think the goalkeeper dives, he is faking an injury because he cannot get to the next one, he did the same on the first goal as well. The referee somehow gets that so wrong it is incredible.”
