Morocco Wasteful As DR Congo Battle Back For AFCON Draw

January 21, (THEWILL) – In Africa Cup of Nations action on Sunday, Morocco and DR Congo played to a 1-1 draw in a hard-fought group-stage match. Morocco came into the match as favourites, but DR Congo proved to be resilient opponents.

The Atlas Lions started strong, with the duo of Achraf Hakimi and Hakim Ziyech connecting well down the right side. Ziyech had a good chance saved early before Hakimi broke the deadlock. Morocco then conceded a penalty due to a handball by Selim Amallah in the box. Fortunately for Morocco, Congo’s Cedric Bakambu hit the post with his penalty attempt.

Morocco looked lacking in energy to start the second half. Congo nearly capitalised when Dylan Batubinsika had a chance from close range but sent his shot wide. The Leopards finally found the equaliser in the 75th minute through Silas, who finished a low cross from Meschack Elia.

The match was tense down the stretch. Standout Morocco keeper Yassine Bounou made a critical late save to keep the Atlas Lions level. Both teams battled fatigue due to the extreme heat, but a 1-1 draw was a fair result.

The point keeps both sides in contention to advance from Group C. Morocco remain atop the group with one match left against Zambia. DR Congo have advanced from the group stage in their last three AFCON appearances, so will be confident heading into their finale versus Tanzania.
