December 15, (THEWILL) – Luka Modric and Marcelo have both tested positive for COVID-19, according to Real Madrid.
The club posted a brief statement on its website to this effect but did not provide any other information. Modric and Marcelo are now expected to miss Madrid’s next two La Liga games before the winter break, against Cadiz at home on Sunday and Athletic Bilbao away the following Wednesday.
The 36-year-old Modric has been in excellent form recently, and Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti singled him out for praise after the team’s 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid this weekend.
“I congratulated him on his performance after the game, because he was spectacular,” Ancelotti said post-match. “He was spectacular on the ball all night, and without the ball he was extraordinary.”
In 12 games this season, Modric has clocked four assists, while Marcelo has been used infrequently. Real tops La Liga with an eight-point gap over Sevilla, while the beleaguered Barcelona trail by 18 points.
