September 02, (THEWILL) – Al-Hilal produced an astonishing comeback to defeat reigning champions, Al-Ittihad, 4-3 in a thrilling Saudi Pro League clash on Friday night.
Despite trailing twice in the match, Al-Hilal displayed resilience to turn the game around and end Al-Ittihad’s perfect start to the season. The champions went ahead through Romarinho in the 16th minute before Aleksandar Mitrovic equalised for Al-Hilal. Goals from Karim Benzema and Abderrazak Hamdallah saw Al-Ittihad take a 3-1 lead into half-time.
However, Al-Hilal came storming back in the second half. Mitrovic pulled a goal back on the hour mark before completing his hat-trick from the penalty spot to make it 3-3. The comeback was complete when Salem Al Dawsari netted the winner in the 71st minute to seal a dramatic 4-3 victory for Al-Hilal.
The win moves Al-Hilal top of the table as the only unbeaten team left in the league. Mitrovic became the fourth player to score a hat-trick this season as he inspired Al-Hilal’s fightback. The defeat ended Al-Ittihad’s flawless start to the campaign.
The battle at the top of the Saudi Pro League continues on Saturday when Al-Nassr and Al-Ahli play their matches. Al-Ahli can go top with a win in that next fixture.
