January 29,(THEWILL) – Kaoru Mitoma’s stunning volley in stoppage time helped Brighton and Hove Albion secure a 2-1 victory against Liverpool in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday.
Earlier, Lewis Dunk equalised Harvey Elliott’s opener in the first half, which Liverpool dominated. However, Jurgen Klopp’s side failed to show the same intensity in the second half, allowing Brighton to take control of the game.
Mitoma’s late winner capped off a fantastic performance by Brighton, who were reinvigorated after the break. With Mitoma seeing more of the ball, Liverpool’s defence began to crumble and Klopp reacted by substituting Trent Alexander-Arnold with James Milner. Solly March and Evan Ferguson both had close-range efforts blocked by the Liverpool defence in the final minutes.
Despite Liverpool’s efforts to hold on for a replay, Mitoma put an end to their FA Cup defence with his 92nd-minute goal. Liverpool’s attention now turns to the English Premier League and their upcoming match against Wolves on Saturday. With their hopes of retaining the FA Cup over and the Premier League title race seemingly out of reach, their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 tie against Real Madrid takes on even greater importance.
Meanwhile, Brighton’s rise continues as they look ahead to Monday’s draw for the fifth round and hunt for their first major trophy in club history.
