November 06, (THEWILL) – Juventus claimed a vital 1-0 victory away at Fiorentina on Sunday, courtesy of an early goal from 20-year-old Fabio Miretti. The win moves Juve to within two points of Serie A leaders, Inter Milan, as they continue to be in the title race this season.
Miretti scored the decisive goal in the 10th minute after being set up by Filip Kostic’s cutback across the box. Despite Fiorentina dominating possession and creating several chances, Juventus held firm defensively with goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny, making some key saves.
The match went ahead as planned despite calls for it to be postponed due to the recent devastating storms in the region. Both sets of players paid tribute to the victims ahead of kick-off in a show of solidarity.
Fiorentina were left frustrated in front of goal as the likes of Antonin Barak, Nicolas Gonzalez and Cristiano Biraghi all went close but failed to beat Szczesny. Juve almost doubled their lead late on through substitute Andrea Cambiaso but his effort was kept out.
The win lifts Juventus up to second place in Serie A, two points behind leaders Inter Milan and four points ahead of third-placed AC Milan. Manager Massimiliano Allegri will be delighted with the gritty victory as the Old Lady aim to get back to the top of Italian football this campaign.
