April 26, (THEWILL)- An army commander, Major A. G Mohammed, has been killed by bandits in an ambush on Thursday evening at Malali village in Kankara Local Government Area, where he was called to respond to an attack on the village.
Major Mohammed, an officer of the 17 Brigade, Nigerian Army, was part of Operation Hadarin Daji and oversaw military operations in the Vantumaki, Dan Ali, and Kankara areas of the state.
The tragic news was announced by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, on his X profile on Friday.
“The news of the demise of Major A.G Mohammed of 17 Brigade, Katsina State, Operation Hadarin DAJI, is indeed heart-wrenching. Mohammed paid the supreme price while combating bandits in the North West of Katsina State.
“Until his death, he served as the commander covering Yantumaki, Dan Ali and Kankara Axis. He was one of the most gallant, courageous and highly dedicated officers,” Makama wrote.
“As you know, Malali is along Zangon Pawwa road, and that area is completely taken over by bandits. Whenever there is an attack the security agents usually ask for reinforcement from the Maraban Dan’Ali camp, and this new commander would promptly respond.
“This time around, they asked for his reinforcement and he came using a Hilux vehicle, instead of the Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), perhaps the APCs were not available at the time. Unfortunately, his assailants waylaid his vehicle and shot him in the head,” a source told Makama.
