November 05, (THEWILL) – Chelsea and Nigeria legend John Obi Mikel is no longer an employee of the Kuwaiti club to which he was previously signed less than two months before the January transfer window opens.
Kuwait SC stated on Thursday that the experienced midfielder’s contract has been terminated through a post via their official Instagram account. Mikel had been with Kuwait SC for four months after signing a one-year contract on a free transfer in July.
Shortly after signing a contract with the Kuwait side, the former Super Eagles star was named captain.
Despite the fact that he did not make his league debut for Kuwait SC, he did play for the Brigadiers in the AFC Cup.
Mikel has previously played for Chelsea in the Premier League, Middlesbrough and Stoke City in the Championship, Trabzonspor in Turkey, and Tianjin Jinmen Tiger in China.
During his ten-and-a-half years with Chelsea, the centre midfielder made 372 appearances in all competitions, including 59 Champions League matches and four in the Europa League knockout stages.
No reason was provided as the basis for the club’s decision to terminate the contract.
