October 21, (THEWILL) – The Government of Mexico has formally approved the appointment of Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Mexican States, ending an eight-month diplomatic limbo over his posting.

The Mexican government conveyed its acceptance of Omokri’s appointment on Tuesday through its Chargé d’Affaires in Abuja, José Manuel Briseño Flores.

Flores delivered the agrément, the formal diplomatic approval required from a host country before an ambassador can take up an appointment, to the Director of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Babagana Wakil.

Omokri confirmed the development in a statement announcing Mexico’s acceptance of his appointment. He said the approval authorises him to serve as Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico, with concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

“To God be the glory, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me, Bemigho Reno Omokri, to serve as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States, with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Guatemala, the Republic of Honduras, and the Republic of Nicaragua”, he said.

The approval brings an end to months of uncertainty surrounding Omokri’s deployment after President Bola Tinubu approved the posting of Nigerian ambassadors-designate to their respective countries.

Omokri was nominated by President Tinubu for an ambassadorial position in November 2025 alongside other prominent Nigerians, including former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, and former Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu. The nominees were subsequently screened and confirmed by the Senate in December 2025.

On March 6, 2026, President Tinubu approved the deployment of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners to their respective countries, with Omokri posted to Mexico.

His deployment, however, remained pending because the Mexican government had yet to formally communicate its acceptance of his appointment.

The delay prompted questions about the status of his posting, with reports in June suggesting that Mexico might have rejected his nomination.

Omokri dismissed the reports, insisting that Mexico had not rejected his appointment and attributing the delay to diplomatic procedures and preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico co-hosted with the United States and Canada.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs subsequently confirmed in August that Mexico and Japan were among the countries that had yet to formally approve two outstanding Nigerian ambassadorial appointments. The ministry said it was engaging the relevant authorities and expressed confidence that the outstanding approvals would be obtained.

Under international diplomatic practice, agrément is the formal consent given by a receiving state before a foreign government’s nominee can serve as ambassador in that country.

Omokri will be based in Mexico but will also represent Nigeria in Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua under his concurrent accreditation.

His appointment marks his transition from his previous public role as a political commentator and former presidential media aide into Nigeria’s diplomatic service.

Omokri previously served as a media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan and has remained active in political commentary and public advocacy since leaving government.
