December 22, (THEWILL) – Beth Mead has made history by becoming the first female football player to receive the prestigious title of BBC Sports Personality of the Year after she was chosen for the 2022 award.

Her win completed the Lionesses’ full sweep of honours, as they also won Team of the Year while Sarina Wiegman, their manager, was awarded Coach of the Year.

Mead had an incredible 2022, scoring six goals and dishing out five assists to win the player of the Euro 2022 competition and the golden boot as well while helping the Lionesses win their first trophy.

The Arsenal forward has already been crowned Arsenal’s player of the season for 2021-2022, England’s player of the year, and the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year, bringing to a close, a year filled with individual honours.

The 27-year-old joins a distinguished group of former football champions, including Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Michael Owen, Paul Gascoigne, and Bobby Moore and she is the first footballer to win Sports Personality of the Year since Giggs in 2009.

Emma Raducanu won the award in 2021, and Mead’s victory means that for the first time in 50 years—since Princess Anne and Mary Peters won the award in 1971 and 1972, respectively—there are back-to-back female winners of the SPOTY.
