December 02, (THEWILL) – Everton emerged victorious with a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday, with Dwight McNeil’s decisive second-half goal lifting the club just top of the relegation places of the English Premier League table.
The clash at Nottingham’s City Ground was a prime opportunity for Everton to climb up the league rankings and gain an advantage over fellow relegation contenders. Buoyed by the momentum of three wins in their last five league matches, Everton faced a Nottingham squad which had suffered two consecutive home losses.
The first half saw chances for both sides, with Everton striker Beto missing an open net and Nottingham’s Gibbs-White firing just wide. After the restart, McNeil finally broke the deadlock in the 67th minute. Taking the ball on the right side, Jack Harrison crossed it for McNeil to rifle a shot into the far corner.
Nottingham fought hard for an equaliser in the final minutes, but stellar saves from Pickford along with last-ditch Everton defending preserved the lead. At the final whistle, Everton supporters celebrated a huge victory crucial to their fight to get out of the relegation zone.
The win, coming a day after Everton appealed their 10-point deduction for financial breaches, marked a major boost in the club’s hopes of avoiding relegation.
