McIlroy Asks For Ceasefire Between PGA And LIV Golf

September 28, (THEWILL) – In light of the continued hostility between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, world number two, Rory McIlroy, has called for a truce for the sake of the sport.

In a statement on Wednesday, McIlroy said: “I don’t want a fractured game. The game of golf is ripping itself apart, and that’s no good for anyone. It’s not good for the guys on the traditional system or the guys on the other side either.

“Right now, with where everything is, it’s probably not the right time but we probably can’t leave it too much longer. I’m all for getting around the table and sorting things out.”

It was immediately apparent that LIV Golf posed a serious threat to the PGA Tour from the onset and now numerous big-name performers have left for the breakaway tour as it acquires more acceptance, with the very real possibility that the trend might only become worse. Currently, LIV is negotiating an agreement to buy TV time for its events on Fox Sports 1 which will undoubtedly increase its fanbase and hence expand its reach.

According to PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, there is currently no scenario in which the tour will rescind the penalties imposed on the golfers who signed with the LIV series. Greg Norman, the CEO of LIV, used a similar tone in an interview, distancing the breakaway tour from wanting to talk to the PGA because the tide appears to be in their favour.
