November 14, (THEWILL) – Conor McGregor’s highly anticipated return to the UFC octagon could be postponed until the summer of 2024, according to his coach, John Kavanagh. The Irish mixed martial artist has not competed since July 2021 but was hoping to make his comeback in April 2024.
However, Kavanagh has now disclosed that McGregor may have to wait until after April to resume fighting, with next summer looking more likely. “We were hoping for April. That was the hope. That was what we were told. And now it seems to be the summertime,” Kavanagh revealed.
There had been speculation that the 34-year-old could make his return at the milestone UFC 300 event in April. But a potential bout at the organisation’s International Fight Week, usually held in July, now appears more probable.
Kavanagh admitted McGregor is “very frustrated” by the delay to his return. The coach said he was initially “worried” about the fighter’s mental health but added that hearing McGregor is training hard with new partners has reassured him.
While the exact date is still to be confirmed, Kavanagh reiterated that McGregor is “100 per cent” ready to compete again after recovering from the broken leg he suffered in his last fight. The trainer stated that although McGregor’s career will not last forever, he still has “a couple of years” left to achieve his goals in the sport he “needs” and “loves”.
