September 08, (THEWILL) – Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over 10-man Marseille heralded Tottenham’s return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2019/2020 season, and Richarlison scored both of his team’s goals.
In this their first competitive matchup against the Ligue 1 team, Spurs got off to a poor start, but soon after the break, they shook off their lethargy and the straight red card shown to Chancel Mbemba, for a professional foul, substantially aided their cause.
To the joy of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium crowd, Richarlison twice headed past Pau Lopez in the final 15 minutes as Antonio Conte’s team fully capitalised on the their numerical advantage to break the deadlock and take maximum points from their home grounds.
Spurs are now tied for first place in Group D with Sporting CP after the Portuguese team’s 3-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt earlier in the day.
For their next match, Spurs will square up against the EPL defending champions Manchester City before taking on Sporting in the UCL away from home next week, while Marseille first welcomes Lille to their grounds in Ligue 1 Saturday tie before they host Frankfurt during UCL matchday two.
