February 03, (THEWILL) – Paris Saint-Germain extended their lead at the top of France’s Ligue 1 to nine points on Friday night, beating mid-table opponents, Strasbourg, 2-1 away from home. Kylian Mbappe scored his 20th league goal of the campaign, despite missing a first-half penalty.
The hosts started brightly, with striker, Moise Sahi forcing an excellent early save from PSG goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma. However, Strasbourg were unable to capitalise on their positive opening and instead found themselves falling behind in the 32nd minute. A defensive error allowed Marco Asensio to set up Mbappe for a simple finish.
PSG began the second half as they ended the first, quickly doubling their advantage through midfielder, Asensio, just after the break. He latched onto a superb Mbappe pass before slotting home in composed fashion. Though Strasbourg’s Dilane Bakwa did pull one back midway through the half, the visitors held firm to make it 14 games unbeaten against their opponents.
Next up for PSG is a home Coupe de France tie versus Brest on Wednesday. Strasbourg also turn their attention to cup commitments, facing Le Havre on the same evening as they look to bounce back from this defeat – their first in nine matches across all competitions.
