January 08, (THEWILL) – Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe has joined Napoli on loan for the remainder of the season. Tuanzebe, who played 11 games for Aston Villa on loan this season, was recently recalled by Manchester United.
However, the defender has now agreed to join Serie A team Napoli, putting the 24-year-old English footballer on the move once more.
THEWILL recalls that Tuanzebe had previously spent two loan spells at Villa Park, both in the Championship, in 2018 and 2019, and has 37 appearances for United under his belt as well.
Tuanzebe could make his first appearance for Luciano Spalletti’s side against Sampdoria on Sunday, with the club suffering from injuries, COVID-19 issues, and the TotalEnergies 2021 Africa Cup of Nations call-ups.
Napoli, who are in third place in Serie A, have the joint-best defensive record in the league this season, conceding only 15 goals in 20 games. They have, however, struggled without key defender Kalidou Koulibaly, who was out for a month due to injury before heading to the Africa Cup of Nations.
Since Koulibaly’s last outing, a 2-2 draw with Sassuolo in early December, Spalletti’s club has only preserved one clean sheet, and will now hope that Tuanzebe, who has represented England at three youth levels, will give important support in the heart of their backline.
