July 18, (THEWILL) – Manchester United have reportedly reached an agreement with Inter Milan to sign Cameroonian goalkeeper, Andre Onana.
The 27-year-old shot-stopper has been on manager Erik ten Hag’s radar this summer as the Red Devils seek a replacement for long-serving David De Gea. The deal is said to be worth an initial £43.8 million, with a potential additional £3.4m in add-ons. Personal terms have also been agreed, and Onana is expected to sign a five-year contract with the option for an additional season.
While the completion of paperwork and a medical examination are still pending, it remains uncertain whether Onana will be able to join the team for their pre-season tour in the United States. However, once the transfer is finalised, the Cameroon international will become Manchester United’s second signing of the summer, following the acquisition of Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount for an initial fee of £55m.
Onana’s arrival is expected to seamlessly integrate him into Ten Hag’s system, given his exceptional skills and confidence with the ball, which he displayed at Inter Milan and previously under the Dutch manager when both Ten Hag and Onana were still at Eredivisie giants Ajax.
The pursuit of a new number one goalkeeper was not initially a top priority for United this summer. However, as the season progressed, the decision was made to seek a replacement for De Gea. Onana is now poised to step into the role, while speculation lingers regarding the futures of Dean Henderson and Tom Heaton within the squad.
