January 07, (THEWILL) – Manchester United secured their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 3-1 victory over Everton at Old Trafford for their seventh consecutive victory in all competitions.
Everton’s Frank Lampard was under pressure coming into the match following a defeat to Brighton, and things got off to a rough start for the team when Antony scored in the opening minutes. Anthony Martial had a chance to double United’s lead but narrowly missed the target.
Conor Coady equalized for Everton after David De Gea’s error, but United regained the lead thanks to Coady’s second goal of the game, this time in his own post.
De Gea made up for his mistake with a save on a shot from Everton’s Seamus Coleman later in the match, while Everton goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, also made a spectacular save on a shot from Bruno Fernandes. In the end, Marcus Rashford’s penalty kick proved to be the decisive goal.
That was all United needed to punch their ticket for the draw of the FA Cup fourth round of the competition. It will do nothing to ease the pressure piling up on Frank Lampard, who is now eight matches without a win, going as far back as October 22.
