December 22, (THEWILL) – Manchester United’s scouting department valued Brazilian winger Antony at £25 million when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was manager, considerably less than the £86 million the club eventually paid Ajax for the player in August 2022, a new report has revealed.
The 23-year-old’s first 16 months at Old Trafford have failed to justify his massive price tag. In 38 English Premier League appearances, Antony has scored only 4 goals. His overall tally stands at 8 goals in 62 games across all competitions since joining United.
According to The Athletic’s recent expose on United’s muddled internal operations, the club’s initial offer to Ajax for Antony was £60 million. However, with the summer transfer window nearing its close and negotiations stalling, United returned to the table and agreed to pay Ajax’s full asking price.
The record-breaking deal has hampered United’s ability to reinforce their squad. Citing Financial Fair Play concerns, the club settled for loan deals for Wout Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer in January, both of whom have now left.
Antony’s future at the club seems secure for the moment given the significant investment. However, impending changes to United’s leadership under new part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe are expected to overhaul football operations roles and decision-making processes at the club.
