Man Utd, Greenwood Mutually Agree To Part Ways

August 21, (THEWILL) – Manchester United have confirmed that they have reached a mutual agreement with striker, Mason Greenwood, for him to leave the club.

The 21-year-old was initially suspended by United in January 2022, amid serious allegations made against him. However, after a year-long investigation by authorities, all criminal charges were dropped in February 2023 due to insufficient evidence. With the police investigation closed, United proceeded with their own internal review of the situation.

After carefully evaluating the available information and consulting with all involved parties, the club determined there was insufficient evidence for the serious accusations made against Greenwood. Given the sensitivity of the case, United say they sought to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the facts.

Ultimately, both Greenwood and United agreed it would be best for him to continue his career away from Old Trafford. In a statement, Greenwood acknowledged making mistakes and accepted responsibility for poor judgement. However, he maintains his innocence regarding the criminal allegations.

While Greenwood’s footballing ability has never been in doubt, his presence was deemed too much of a distraction for the club to overcome. United say they will now work to facilitate Greenwood’s exit on amicable terms. The young striker came up through United’s academy system and said he will always have an attachment to the club. This outcome closes a difficult chapter for both Greenwood and Manchester United.
