November 14, (THEWILL) – Manchester United right-back, Diogo Dalot, has withdrawn from the Portugal squad for their upcoming international matches against Liechtenstein and Iceland.

The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed that Dalot will play no part in Portugal’s final 2023 Euro qualifying fixtures due to “personal reasons”. He has been replaced in the squad by FC Porto defender João Mário.

Dalot’s withdrawal means that Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is now the only Red Devils player in manager Roberto Martinez’s Portugal squad. Fernandes will be looking to add to his seven goals in Euro qualifying as the Euro 2016 winners aim to round off their perfect campaign with wins in both matches.

The 24-year-old Dalot has been an ever-present for United in the English Premier League this season, filling in at both right and left-back. However, his form had dipped prior to the international break, with subpar performances in defeats to Newcastle United and FC Copenhagen.

Portugal have already sealed qualification for Euro 2024 after winning all eight of their qualifying matches so far. Martinez has transformed them into a free-scoring outfit, netting 32 goals in qualifying – 12 more than any other nation. They will now be looking to complete a 100% record before turning focus to defending their title at next summer’s tournament in Germany.
