Man Utd Cut Their Losses As Maguire Exits For West Ham

August 09, (THEWILL) – Manchester United defender, Harry Maguire, is set to leave Old Trafford after the Red Devils agreed to sell the 29-year-old to West Ham United for £30 million.

The England international’s future at United has been uncertain since he was stripped of the captaincy last month, with manager Erik ten Hag preferring the centre-back pairing of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.

West Ham had an initial £30m bid for Maguire rejected earlier this week as United aimed to recoup more of the £80m they paid Leicester City for him in 2019. However, after the Hammers indicated they could improve their contract offer to the player, an agreement has now been reached between the clubs.

Maguire is said to be open to the move to London Stadium as he seeks regular playing time ahead of the World Cup later this year. His departure will see United make a £50m loss on their record-breaking investment in the defender just three years ago.

The deal comes as West Ham remain in talks with United over midfielder Scott McTominay, who was the subject of a separate £30m bid this week. The Hammers are also close to deals for Ajax’s Edson Alvarez and Southampton captain, James Ward-Prowse, as they continue a busy summer rebuild.
