GTBCO FOOD DRINL

January 09, (THEWILL) – Manchester United booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a straightforward 2-0 victory over League One side, Wigan Athletic. Goals in both halves from Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes, ensured safe passage against the Latics, currently 53 places below them in the league system.

The Red Devils dominated proceedings at the DW Stadium, raining in an incredible 33 attempts on goal. Still, profligate finishing meant they only had Dalot’s curling 22nd minute opener and Fernandes’ 74th minute penalty to show for their pressure. The result sets up an away trip to either League Two Newport County or non-league Eastleigh in the next round.

With new part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe looking on, manager Erik ten Hag named a strong line-up, despite having over 10 players unavailable. Rasmus Hojlund returned from illness to lead the line, while Scott McTominay filled in admirably in midfield.

Wigan created a golden chance to shock the visitors inside the opening minutes but Andre Onana denied Thelo Aasgaard’s close range effort, sparking a period of United dominance. Diogo Dalot finally made the pressure count, engineered space on the edge of the box and guided an effort inside the far post.

The second half was a less frantic affair as Wigan switched system to subdue their illustrious opponents. However, Fernandes converted a 74th minute penalty to give United breathing space after Liam Shaw’s foul. From there Ten Hag’s men professionally saw out victory.
