January 02, (THEWILL) – Manchester City are set to sign talented Velez Sarsfield midfielder, Maximo Perrone, in a deal worth around $9m (£7.5m).
The 19-year-old had also attracted interest from other European sides including Benfica, Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, but it appears that City have won the race for his signature to move from his Argentine club.
Perrone made his senior debut for Velez in March 2022 and impressed many football fans with his performances in midfield, with some even drawing comparisons to Argentine legend Fernando Redondo and Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.
Personal terms were not an issue in negotiations and City reportedly confirmed their willingness to trigger Perrone’s release clause to finalise the deal. The midfielder is expected to sign a long-term contract with the club before returning to South America to participate in the CONMEBOL Sudamericano Sub-20 with Argentina.
Perrone’s move to Manchester City is expected to further boost his already-rapid career growth. He made his senior debut for Velez in March 2022 and has since become a regular player for the club, scoring a few goals and assisting others while primarily playing as a central midfielder.
