December 22, (THEWILL) – Manchester City have etched their names into the history books after being crowned the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup champions on Friday. A comfortable 4-0 triumph over Brazilian outfit Fluminense saw Pep Guardiola’s men become the first English side to ever win five major honours across a single calendar year.
An early strike from Julian Alvarez set the tone before an own goal doubled City’s advantage. Phil Foden then got in on the act himself prior to Alvarez grabbing his second of the evening to round off a resounding victory in Saudi Arabia.
The Club World Cup caps off an unprecedented 12 months laden with silverware at the Etihad Stadium. Alongside global glory, 2023 also took the EPL, Champions League, FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup titles – an achievement no other English club can lay claim to.
The only trophies to escape City’s grasp this year were the Community Shield and the Carabao Cup. A penalty shootout defeat to Arsenal denied them the former, while a shock last-eight exit at the hands of Southampton ended their reign as EFL Cup holders.
Nonetheless, the haul of five major honours sees City strengthen their status as English football’s dominant force.
