Malian Football Icon Salif Keita Passes Away At 76

September 02, (THEWILL) – Salif Keita, the renowned Malian forward, who clinched the inaugural African Footballer of the Year award in 1970, breathed his last in Bamako on Saturday, leaving behind a storied legacy that will forever resonate within the annals of African sports history.

The saddening news was confirmed by the country’s Football Federation, without any information as to cause of death. Keita’s demise marks the end of an era, as he was considered one of the continent’s enduring sporting legends. His illustrious career spanned across different countries, with notable stints in France at clubs such as St Etienne and Olympique de Marseille.

The delicate talents of the African football icon also graced Spain, where he donned the jersey for Valencia, and Portugal, where he showcased his skills at Sporting Lisbon.

Keita culminated his football journey in the North American Soccer League, solidifying his status as a global footballing icon. His journey, which began at the tender age of 16 when he made his debut for the Malian national team, also included the country’s historic run to the 1972 Africa Cup of Nations final.

Beyond his remarkable achievements on the field, Keita continued to serve the sport he loved. Between 2005 and 2009, he assumed the role of President of the Mali Football Federation, further cementing his commitment to the development and progress of football in Mali.
