December 14, (THEWILL) –Â Police in Ogun State have arrested an 18-year-old housemaid for allegedly poisoning her mistress, one Mrs. Esther Bada.
The suspect, Tope Fasanya, a senior secondary student (SS1), was arrested following a complaint by the victim.
The victim reported to the police that the she felt sharp pains in her stomach after eating food given her by the suspect.
She explained further that when the pain became severe, she called on her maid to come and eat the remaining food but she refused.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident to newsmen in a statement in Abeokuta on Tuesday.
Oyeyemi said that upon receiving the report, the woman was quickly rushed to Owode Egba General Hospital, from where she was referred to Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, for proper medical treatment.
He said the suspect was subsequently arrested and initially denied the allegations when the police interrogated her
The Police PRO said the maid was transferred to the homicide section of the state criminal investigation and intelligence department where she confessed that she added rat poison to the victim’s food.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect has been living with the woman since she was in primary three. This followed the death of her father, the victim took the girl in and agreed to sponsor her education.
When asked why she decided to kill her benefactor, the suspect, who described the victim as a very caring person, said that she only wanted to return to her mother and could only do that by killing her guardian.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole, has directed that the suspect be arraigned in court as soon as
investigations have been concluded.
