January 03, (THEWILL) – Harry Maguire will miss Manchester United’s English Premier League encounter against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday night at Old Trafford due to an injury.
The United captain played 90 minutes in the win over Burnley on December 30 but has developed an injury, leaving Ralf Rangnick short of center-back options with Victor Lindelof still recovering from COVID-19.
Eric Bailly left the game against Burnley after 66 minutes with what appears to be a strained hamstring, putting his fitness in doubt and allowing Phil Jones to make his first Premier League appearance in two years. Despite not being seen at the team hotel on Sunday evening, Bailly still has a chance to play.
Maguire was also absent from the squad’s meeting at United’s Lowry base, and the length of his absence has yet to be confirmed.
Jones has pleased Rangnick in training, although he has only played in two under-23s games this season. Nemanja Matic provides an additional option.
Raphael Varane was rested for Burnley’s visit after appearing three days earlier at Newcastle after a two-month layoff, however he did come off the bench for Bailly. Rangnick is expected to wait until the last minute to name Varane’s key defensive partner for the Wolves match.
