August 08, (THEWILL) – Marcus Maddison, a 29-year-old former footballer, was sentenced to 20 months in prison for a brutal attack that left a 60-year-old woman with severe facial injuries.
Maddison, who previously played for Peterborough United and Charlton Athletic, appeared at Teesside Crown Court where he received the sentence after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm. The attack occurred in September 2022 after a night of heavy drinking.
Maddison struck the victim once in the face, breaking multiple facial bones. Witnesses described hearing a loud “pop” when his fist, adorned with a large ring, made contact. The victim suffered complex fractures as well as ongoing dental issues and anxiety. The judge called it a “spontaneous yet horrific assault” and said the force used was devastating.
Maddison initially denied involvement but admitted guilt five days later. His guilty plea reduced his sentence from a possible 30 months. At the time, Maddison was playing for Darlington FC, who cancelled his contract following an investigation.
